India expresses concern over military coup in Myanmar

India has expressed deep concern over the military coup in Myanmar and has called for the restoration of the democratic process in the south-east Asian country.

“We have noticed the developments in Myanmar with deep concern. India has always been steadfast in its support to the process of democratic transition in Myanmar. We believe that the rule of law and the democratic process must be upheld. We are monitoring the situation closely,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

Myanmar's military has now detained de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyiand President Win Myint and announced an emergency under which it has taken control of the country for one year.

Just a few hours before the parliament was about to resume for the first time after elections, the two civilian leaders both were detained in Myanmar's capital Naypyidaw.

The Chief Minister of Karen State was also held along with several other regional ministers. Soldiers also seized the city hall in Myanmar's former capital Yangon.

The military coup has come after several weeks of rising differences with the country's civilian government over allegations of fraud during the elections held in November 2020.

The military had claimed that there were irregularities in the elections, which Ms. Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) party had won easily.
